I had a much needed, oddly relaxing 36 hours in Madison this weekend. Not only did I get to catch up with one of my best friends I ran a solid half marathon… 1:59:20 to be exact. Not earth shattering, but very solid. I held a good pace of 8:40 for the first 8 miles then just couldn’t keep up with the hills. It gives me hope that I will be able to break 1:50 this year but I have a lot more work to do. I’ll be back at you later this week with my race review but here is a quick rundown from my weekend in the beautiful city of Madison.
I landed Friday night, miracle of all miracles EARLY, I feel like that never happens. I had eaten a sandwich during the flight so Brittany and I just grabbed water at a local grocery store, made our game plan for the next morning and went to bed.
The race started at 7AM so we were up early to pick up our packets and head to the start. I felt pretty good for most of the race except for the last three miles which really got me. I must have looked like I was struggling because a woman actually ran over to me to make sure I was going ok, I’ve never had that happen before and I’m sure I’ve looked much worse at miles 10 than I did Saturday.
After the race we lounged in the grass along the lake for a while admiring our medals and eventually made it to the hotel to clean up and then head out to explore the city.
We ate lunch at City Brewery where we had some local craft beer and fried cheese curds. When in Wisconsin right?
There was a local farmers market and craft fair going on so we did a bit of shopping before getting some great pictures in front of the capital
After some more shopping we did more craft beer sampling and then went to relax in front of the lake shore at the student union. The deck at the student union is unlike anything else I have ever seen. I’m not sure how they get any work done because there were 5 different places to get drinks, food and desserts. You could literally walk out of class, grab a beer and jump in the lake. Must be nice!
We were exhausted from the run so towards the end of the afternoon we headed back to the hotel to get a quick nap before dinner. I hate to admit how early we went to bed but it had been a long fun day. I would love to visit Madison again it is such a nice town. It reminded me a lot about home… without the awesome drinking deck and large lake to swim in!
Sunday I flew back bright and early to spend the day relaxing with P. I couldn’t have asked for a better weekend. I really needed some rest and relaxation. You can laugh at me but yes running a half marathon on a perfect summer day, in a great city with one of my best friends is what I call relaxing So that’s my weekend in Madison.
What did you do this weekend?
