Summer Vegetables

Summer Vegetables- Not So Perfect Life

At the organic food store last night I asked where the brussel sprouts were. If you know any thing about in season vegetables you know that it was a dumb question to ask at a local farmers vegetable shop. Brussel sprouts are NOT in season.

I figured if I didn’t know that, then there are plenty of other “city” girls out there that don’t have the fortune of growing their own garden and who might not know whats fresh and in season right now.

So here goes!

  • Corn
  • Cucumbers
  • Eggplant
  • Peas
  • Green Beans
  • Okra
  • Bell/ Sweet Peppers
  • Shelling Beans
  • Tomatoes (I know not a vegetable)
  • Zucchini
  • Chard
  • Green Onions/ Onions
  • Spinach
  •  Tomatillos

There may be some odd ones that I’m missing if so let me know.

One thing that I noticed about this list is that they are all easy and quick to cook. During the hot summer the last thing you want to do is roasting vegetables every day in a steamy kitchen. Even though I am still really craving roasted brussel sprouts right now :)

I think my favorite summer vegetables are spinach and zucchini.  When I was driving through Texas I saw many ruined crops from the current drought. It was sad to see so much wasted food, I am thankful that we live in a country where even in a drought we all have access to fresh summer vegetables.

What is your favorite summer vegetable and how do you cook it? Did I miss any vegetables on my list?

  1. Oh I am the WORST at knowing whats in season. And you’re right- I’m not sure why its so embarrassing but when someone calls you out on it, you just sort of want to crawl under the produce stand. I lovvve green beans, especially in summer. Grilled with salt and pepper- I cant stop eating them.

  2. I love spinach and corn! What a great list…I am really bad at knowing what’s in season. I just buy all the veggies I like when I’m at the grocery store if they are there. I know it’s better to eat in season stuff though and it makes sense. Thanks for sharing!!!

I have been trying to become more aware of the benefits and knowing what’s in season but had no idea before too. Yum, thanks for sharing this great list, I adore all summer vegetables :)

I’m a huge roasted brussels sprouts fan. But roasted green beens are also delish. You should try subbing them when you’re craving brussels!

  5. Great seasonal and informational post girl! It’s funny but out here in California we have way more veggies year round than most parts of the country. I have to try and remember that when I post a recipe. My favorite summer time veggies are summer squash, zucchini, corn on the cob and heirloom and cherry tomatoes, which I know are not a vegetable, but seriously, they don’t taste like a fruit at all to me, so I throw them in the veggie family! xoxo, Jackie

  6. I have always heard of this pineapple whip from Disneyland…but sad to say, I’ve never tried it. First of all, my kids do not like Disneyland. I know, crazy. But they just wanted to play at the beach. Which we don’t have the ocean in Utah…but we have a huge themed park like Disneyland.
I was bummed too that we never stopped at the pineapple place up by the North Shore in Hawaii…I love pineapple!
