On the Road Again… Healthy Traveling

What do you do when you find yourself traveling for work the week after you get back from vacation?

The last thing I wanted to do this week was eat unhealthy and to not work out. I’ve been struggling to get back into the workout groove since vacation. Sunday I was almost back on track when I had to pack and leave for a work trip in Chicago. So I have to be creative or mostly to be honest really boring with my eating this week! Salads lots of salads (that’s where the creativity comes in)… and lots of water.

Traveling and eating healthy means you need to plan ahead. I try to cut up apples and seal them in plastic bags before flights. I hate airport fruit, it’s always old and tasteless compared to my good grocery store fruit. I also try to pack some protein which ends up being jerky, obviously not vegan or Mini Kind bars.

Being out of your routine can also really effect your breakfast schedule and what your eating. On business trips try to grab some protein and nothing high in sugar. Oatmeal is a great option and it is being more widely sold at even places like McDonald’s. The last thing you need is to fall sleep from a sugar crash during your mid morning meeting.

When I travel I also try to get in a few runs. I love running in new cities. Even if you only have time for a 20 minute run, it’s better than nothing. I’m lucky to be in Chicago during the summer when the weather is awesome! I love spending time on North Avenue Beach. Hopefully I’ll be able to do a run there tonight.

Have you ever ran in Chicago? What is your go to healthy travel snack?

I love Chicago! I just did a race there not too long ago. When I travel I bring packets of almond butter, Picky Bars and trail mix :)

Where do you find mini Kind bars?

  2. I’m with you in the traveling for work category. I travel about 10 times a year for long periods of time (usually 10 days) and it’s so hard to keep healthy. I’m usually working long days with no time to work out, so snacks like Kind bars and fruit are awesome. And you’re so right – a 20 minute run is better than no run at all! Hope you have a wonderful trip!

  4. I totally agree that it’s tough to always be really healthy when traveling. When I travel, I tend to bring lots of vegan healthy bars because they become my go to snack. My idea of healthy traveling is just making the best choices you can whereever you are…gotta enjoy!
